A maiden, Love her given name,
Pure of heart, of comely frame,
Lost is she, lost, utterly lost,
Lost, how lost, at what a cost.
Her form, a beloved face, her soul, a grace,
Like Mary, smiling, light of place,
And when she walks, the flowers fall,
A ghazal's echo, answering all.
A life so brief, a death so near,
Yet understands the language of a tear.
Lost in cycles, lives unspent,
As if but yesterday she went,
As if this moment were her plight,
As if she stood before my sight.
She stood beside me, close and near,
Now vanished, swallowed by the fear.
What trickery, what wandering maze?
My thoughts bewildered, in a daze,
I measure her, my love's true measure,
That maiden, to whom I pledge my treasure,
That maiden, to whom all are bound,
That maiden, by the Divine is crowned.
If she but read, if she but knew,
If, though alive, she felt the dew
Of death upon her, cold and deep,
That once she'd meet, my vow to keep,
Lest faith itself should be defiled,
And I, from living, be exiled,
No song would then be sung by me,
No song would then find liberty.
No song could then exist for me.
