O Ambika, Mother of the World, O skull-cup wielder,
Jagadambika manifested, Chandi's fierce avatar.
As Chamunda, She struck, a tempest unleashed,
Upon the hordes of demons, a calamity released.
With a thunderous hand, She swirled, a grand Mother,
Heads fell, severed, upon the earth, one after another.
When cries of terror arose, as the demon circle faltered,
Then came a great demon, Raktabija, the blood emissary, altered.
As the Mother severed his head, and blood-drops did fall,
From each drop, a new Raktabija arose, answering the call.
Seeing this, Chandi summoned Kali, dark and divine,
This was the only way to end the bloodline.
O Ambika, Mother of the World, O skull-cup wielder,
O Mother Mahakali, O Mother Mahakali!
Wearing a garland of skulls, adorned with lifeless hands,
With a trident and a sword, Kali unleashed her commands.
Squeezing the blood from Raktabija's head, she tasted the red,
She lapped up the life-blood, not a single drop was shed.
When Raktabija’s corpse fell, a great panic arose,
Seeing Kali’s tumultuous form, a cry of terror arose.
The earth wept, the heavens trembled, and Kailash shook with the sound,
The meditation of Shiva was broken, his third eye now unbound.
Shiva arrived to persuade, to cease such a gaze,
He stumbled and fell himself, at Kali's feet in a daze.
As Kali's gaze fell upon him, her tongue, long and red, unfurled,
Seeing Shiva beneath her feet, she froze, rooted to the world.

Some call you Chamunda, some call you Kali, dark and deep,
Some call you Jagadamba, Ambe, whose power will keep.
