A thousand yearnings, each a breath held tight,
Demands the soul's surrender, bathed in light.
My heart's desires, a torrent, spilled and gone,
Yet still, the sum feels ever so withdrawn.
A thousand yearnings.
From Eden's gates, a tale we've always known,
Of Adam's fall, a seed so deeply sown.
But shame's own veil, I wear it as my guise,
From your bright streets, my spirit softly sighs.
In love's embrace, the difference fades away,
'Twixt life and death, where shadows gently play.
We live for them, the idol of our gaze,
Whose name, in death, our whispered breath betrays.
A thousand yearnings.
For God's own sake, lift not the curtain's hold,
O tyrant, lest that idol, yet unfold.
For fear it might, within this hallowed space,
Reveal the same, the idol of this place.
Where is the tavern, Ghalib, where did we part?
The preacher's words, a wound upon the heart.
