Poetic Translation - Lyrics of Hanuman Chalisa (Shankar Mahadevan)
Upon the lotus feet of the Guru I bow,
With dust of those sacred blooms, my mind I now endow.
Cleansing the mirror of my soul's dim gaze,
I sing of Raghubar's pure, resplendent praise,
Bestowing the four fruits, the life's ultimate aim.
Knowing my body's weakness, my intellect's flame,
I summon the son of the wind, his strength I embrace,
Bestowing wisdom and power, erasing all disgrace.
Hail Hanuman, ocean of wisdom and grace,
Lord of the monkeys, illuminating space.
Messenger of Rama, of immeasurable might,
Son of Anjani, the wind's pure light.
Heroic and valiant, of thunderbolt frame,
Dispeller of darkness, of virtue's pure name.
Golden hued, with garments so bright,
Earrings adorning, curls in the light.
In hand, a thunderbolt, a banner he wields,
A sacred thread, upon his strong shoulders revealed.
Son of Shiva, the lion's delight,
Whose glory and splendor engulfs the night.
Learned and skilled, with wisdom untold,
Eager to serve, stories of Rama unfold.
A lover of Rama's tales, a heart so devout,
Rama, Lakshman, and Sita, his love he does sprout.
Hail Hanuman, hail Hanuman's gleam,
Rama's messenger, a divine dream.
Hail Hanuman, hail Hanuman's grace,
Rama's messenger, in this sacred space.
In subtle form, to Sita he appeared,
In fearsome form, Lanka he seared.
In mighty form, demons he did slay,
He performed Rama's deeds, come what may.
He brought forth the life-giving herb to revive,
Raghuvira rejoiced, his heart did thrive.
Raghupati praised him with utmost acclaim,
"You are my beloved, my brother in name."
A thousand tongues sing your glory aloud,
Thus, the Lord embraced him, amidst the crowd.
Sanaka and others, Brahma's wise crew,
Narada, Sharada, with Shesha in view.
