Hemant Kumar,Sudha Malhotra and Manna Dey are the singers of this great
bhajan composed by Ravi.

jiten ray on Thursday, September 04, 2008
the voices are so melodious !! today's singers should be inspired by these
masters and come out of the cacophony of bad instrumental music.

kd2013 on Monday, September 08, 2008
Hi, the meaning is as follows: Oh Lord Ghanashyama (dark as a raincloud,
ie. Krishna)! Please give Thy vision (as) my eyes are thirsty. Light the
temple of my heart, O Thou who art in every Ghata (literally: pot, here it
means: residing everywhere or Omnipotent). Thy idols are found in every
temple, yet Thy (actual) face is not seen anywhere. Ages have gone by, yet
the full-moon (night) of (our) meeting has not come yet.

kd2013 on Monday, September 08, 2008
When Thou openest the doors of (Thy) Compassion, the dumb sing in the note:
'So' (the loudest of the seven notes), the blind see, and the lame walk all
the way to Kashi (Varanasi)! (I) drink water to slake my (physical) thirst,
but how to explain to my eyes! (how to quench their thirst to see you).
Give up this hide-and-seek now, O dweller of (my or everybody's) heart! O
Lord Ghanashyama! Please give Thy vision.

Paddu Kapadia on Tuesday, November 18, 2008
this is composed in raag kedar, a simple effective, disciplined BANDISH

Rupa Dore on Sunday, December 14, 2008
The original was by Narsi Mehta /Bhagat himself .

Sunny Sharma on Thursday, December 25, 2008
this bhajan was featured in the recent film "Slumdog Millionaire" - very
nice bhajan, very sad context.

manbearpiggy on Saturday, December 27, 2008
It was indeed a very touching and sad context. However the song is written
by GS Nepali and not Surdas as shown in movie

manbearpiggy on Saturday, December 27, 2008
The last stanza is sung by Manna Dey

just saw the film today and i was appalled by this mistake, most indignant
really. but then, what can you expect in a film without any merit? everyone
praising this film blindly (no pun intended) is just a case of the story of
the emperor's new clothes.

Is it Raag Kedar or Raag Hameer? Other compositions on this raag are Pal do
pal ka saath hamara pal do pal ke yarane hain (Burning Train) Main paagal
mera manwa paagal (Talat Mehmood) Aap yun hi agar hum se milte rahe (Ek
Musafir Ek Hasina) Hum ko man ki shakti dena man vijay karen (Jaya
Bhaduri), and a few others...

Vijay Choudhary on Monday, February 02, 2009
The song is from the movie named "Narsi Bhagat". The lyricist for the song
is G.S. Nepali. However that is not the whole story. The movie itself is
based on the life of Narsingh Mehta(popularly known as Narsi Bhagat), a
15th century famous poet from what is now Gujarat in India. So it is most
probable that the poem itself was originally written by Narsi Bhagat
himself and was edited/recreated by the lyricist Gopal Singal Nepali to fit
the taste of public as the language had changed in 500 years.

Vijay Choudhary on Monday, February 02, 2009
In any case this is not a poem by Surdas, who also lived in 15th and 16th
century. Surdas composed similar devotional poems but not this one. This
era 1400-1600 is known in Indian literature as Bhakti Kaal (Devotional
Age). Lots of poets. Lots of extra ordinary song. Happy to hear this one
though. Thanks for posting.

Vijay Choudhary on Monday, February 02, 2009
Yet another poem by Narsi Bhagat is "Vaishnava Jan to tene kahiye". Has
been sung by many bollywood singers.

Rupa Dore on Monday, February 02, 2009
No. the bhajan is CERTAINLY NOT by Surdas . That is my point. I studied
Hindi poetry at school. Check the historical references for
dates."Vijaychioudh " is right. Even in the original book on which the
movie is based, refers to another bhajan, really by Surdas, ( Akhiyan Hari
darshan ki pyasi" .An Indian lady was paid very well to check it all but
she failed the producers by not doing her homework properly.

i love it thanks to Slumdog Millionaire
I am really sorry to use your words but same goes for me aswell

yr1019 on Saturday, February 07, 2009
Nice to know I'm not the only one who knows of this song through Slumdog Millionaire.

googleruben on Sunday, February 15, 2009
The literal translation means 'Lord (Nath) Krishna (Ghanshyam)- I pray to
you to allow me to visualise (see=darshan) you not just through my eyes but
through igniting my soul (man-mandir ki jyot jagado)... This was just the
first stanza- hope that was helpful. The bhajan opens beautiful memories
for me

Tamal De on Thursday, February 19, 2009
this is probably centuries old song...

Tamal De on Thursday, February 19, 2009
Both these raags are very similar sounding... both being based on the
kalyan thaat... I remember the title song of the famous serial Vikra aur
Betaal as well...

Subir Biswas on Thursday, February 26, 2009
This song is based on raaga Kedar not in Kalyan.

Subir Biswas on Thursday, February 26, 2009
More similar songs from the famous hindi movies are 1. Aap yun hi agar
humse - Ek Musafir Ek Hasina 2. Hamko manki shakti dena - Guddi

elfidanto on Saturday, February 28, 2009
in SDM the answer to question was wrong..it is not by Surdas...! FYI..I am
from village of Surdas...in Faridabad.!

sonny19xx on Monday, March 02, 2009
A good bhajan. Excellently rendered by Hemant K and Sudha M. Many songs
bhajan and non-bhajan have been inspired by this tune. Like Aap yun hi agar
from Ek musafir.. and hum ko manki shakti from Guddi. Manna dey joins in
the last stanza with good effect. The tune is so simple and powerful.
Ravi's beauty. God, bestow sense and mercy into the hearts of all of
humanity . THANKS malkauns01.

Sanskrit is base of every language. My language also use many Sanskrit
words. Nepali are so good in Hindi that they can understand and write Hindi
along with Nepali. I can understand like 90 % Hindi, 70 % Urdu and 30 %
Sanskrit and 99 % Nepali which makes me understand flow of song and words
which is pretty beneficial for translation.

Deepak Seth on Wednesday, March 18, 2009
It is Hindi, but translation is not accurate.

batayanghosh on Friday, March 20, 2009
This song is in hindi with a poetic accent. Offcourse hindi is originated from sanskrit but all of the words used in here are commonly used in hindi. The music is based on raga Kedar !!!!

Can some one please post the song Prabhu Antharyami , Daya karo dayo karo

MelyndaMann on Saturday, April 04, 2009
No, it's not. They lied about who wrote this song also.

MelyndaMann on Tuesday, April 07, 2009
"wantaroom" said: "YES IT IS.. you clearly have no taste!!! " I like this
song. Does that factor into me not having taste? The makers of Slumdog
Millionaire obviously don't like this song because they failed to credit
its singers nor its writers.
