MrsD, spot on! Aap ne to ilfaaz mere moun se hi le liye lol! Ash dances
beautifully but there´s something about it...I wonder if I´m the only one
who thinks her hands are so stiff. It´s like she can´t step out of the
Bharatnatyam style (which is beautiful too). If one watches Rekha or
Madhuri (doing mujras) they really make it look like Kathak and there´s
this amazing inexplicable FLOW in their movements. No.I love the old
Umrao Jaan loads better! And the so called Urdu in this one is...

Hi friend. First of all, I´m not a mr. and secondly, I´m a fullblood
Pathani so I know, believe me, a lot about the history of my beloved
people. However, you have totally misunderstood my comments. If you read it
again, it says the "KHE" SOUND of Arabic. I think, you probably aren´t
familiar with the alphabet of Arabic, Urdu or Persian my friend, no
offence. Khan is a name, Khe sound comes from the letter Khe as in
"Khatam", "Khaalis", "Khoon" etc. Hope that helped..Peace be with you!

@jibarita4life .'jaan' is an endearment often used by lovers. The literal
meaning of the term is 'life'. Although i saw the movie really long time
back so i dont exactly remember in which scene she was titled as
'jaan'.,however i believe that was because those women were very different
from the courtisans today coz they also gave emotional and intellectual
satisfaction (not just physical). Although..their relationship with men
were supposed to b for materialistic benefits, their relationship...

ufff.Kahan puraani waali 'Umrao Jaan' aur kahan yeh nayi wali...iss nayi
waali mein aisa qatl kiya hai bechari Umrao Jaan aur Awadhi shaan-o-shauqat
ka, ki kya batayein. They have butchered the delicate theme of the high
noon of Awadhi culture. The setting looks so contrived. On the other hand,
Muzaffar Ali's Umrao Jaan was cinematic poetry. It depicted the last days
of Awadh in a breathtaking display of virtuosity. The new sets and
'designer' clothes can never match the silken grace.

alka yagnik did an okay job on these songs, and anu malik did not compose
very good songs. they're not bad songs, but if you're recreating umrao
jaan, you should have a composer who has a deep understanding of classical
music and a singer who can sing deep classical songs. the only composer
today that can do that is ismail darbar. and the only singer is kavita
krishnamurthy. just look at these songs, they're not difficult in the
least, and alka still struggles w/ them.
